Moscone Center is San Francisco's primary large-scale meeting facility. In order to maintain San Francisco's place in an increasingly competitive marketplace, resources are needed not only for sales and marketing efforts, but also to update and expand convention facilities. Investing in the convention center is vital to increasing visitor business in San Francisco.
The economic impact of convention groups is not limited to the hotels located near Moscone. Tourist attractions, retail, restaurants, transportation and many other segments of the city benefit when conventions are in town. The dollars they spend ripple into the entire city through "compression" (hotels in other parts of the city experiencing higher occupancy when convention attendees fill the rooms nearest the convention center), pay checks, local purchases and taxes paid by visitors.
The TID, in partnership with the City, will provide a base of resources to renovate Moscone Center and explore the expansion of the facilities.
Moscone Center Renovation Update The Tourism Improvement District, in partnership with the City & County of San Francisco, is well underway with a $56 million dollar renovation of Moscone Center. Work began in August of 2010 and will continue through June 2012. The improvements in Moscone’s North & South buildings will better showcase San Francisco's personality through added color, images and way-finding. Other upgrades include a facelift to meeting rooms and public spaces with new carpet, ceilings, lighting and paint. It will be LEED Gold Certified and more tech-savvy with telecom and data cabling upgrades. And did we mention the bathrooms are beautiful? Eight (out of 24) are already complete with new fixtures, glass tile and, finally, hot water!
